The practice of astrology probably began as soon as humans first started to observe astronomical cycles, with some earliest evidence dating from the 3rd millennium BCE. Through much of history and up until the 17th century, astrology was considered an academic discipline across much of Eurasia ( Composed of the continents of Europe and Asia ) Astrology oriented in Mesopotamia and spread to Indi, but it developed its Western form in Greek civilization during the Hellenistic period. The Mesopotamians not only invented astrology but also Astronomy when they began studying the Cosmos and recording the stars and planets. The science of Astronomy and Astrology were combined at the time. The word Mesopotamia means “between rivers “ in Greek. Home and civilizations of Sumer, Assyria and Babylonia, these peoples are credited with influencing mathematics and Astronomy.
Astrology entered Islamic Culture as part of the Greek Tradition and was returned to European culture through Arabic Learning during Middle Age. Through the Copernican system ( the theory that the Sun is the centre of the solar system ) shattered the geocentric world view that astrology requires, interest in astrology has continued into modern times and astrological signs are still widely believed to influence personality.
The Renaissance however also brought as new spirit of humanism towards more scientific knowledge. Although some Astronomers such as Johannes Kepler still practised astrology but more scientific version of it.
